What starling is good for:

  • Tiny Soft Hackle Wet Flies – classic spider-style patterns.
  • Midge Emergers – starling hackle looks very natural for legs/wings.
  • Small Mayfly Emergers – great for Blue Winged Olive, Pale Watery Dun, etc.
  • Delicate Wing Cases or Overwings – the iridescent sheen can be used for bodies or wing cases.

Best Hook Sizes:

  • #20–18 – perfect match for the shortest starling fibers.
  • #18–16 – most versatile range; fibers sit just right for legs/soft hackles.
  • #16–14 – doable with larger shoulder or back feathers, though it gets sparse.

In short: Starling really shines for flies in the #20–14 range, especially if you tie a lot of 18s and 16s.
