My Favorite Dubbing Loop Tool – The Model M

I've been using this tool for decades, and it’s still my go-to.

How to Use the Model M Dubbing Loop Tool:

  1. Start by making a loop with your thread.
  2. Slide the loop into the arch (crook) of the "M" shape on the tool.
  3. Transfer one side of the loop to the opposite arch so the thread forms a triangle. (see picture #3)
  4. Add your dubbing—a small amount is all you need (seriously, less is more).
  5. With the dubbing in place, slide the thread back to a single arch to close the loop.
  6. Spin the tool to twist the loop into a tight dubbing rope.
  7. Palmer it—wrap the dubbing rope onto the hook shank.
  8. Tie off and finish your fly.
